What is Local Love Truro?
Local Love Truro is exactly what it says ... a way to show some love to local businesses, organizations, people and places in Truro, Nova Scotia.
It grew from a group of like-minds, working together in March 2015 to shine a much-needed spotlight on local retailers and restaurants after a long winter. The first event took place on April 25, 2015, and encouraged people to share their local Saturday shopping on social media using #locallovetruro. The hashtag continued beyond that day ... and the idea of a broader purpose began to form.
In January 2016, Sam Madore and Michelle McCann sat down and asked themselves, "What if we took it a step further?" And so the Local Love Truro Awards, a way to celebrate all that Truro has to offer, were born.

Sam Madore
When she moved back to Truro from Halifax (gasp) ten years ago, she did not fully embrace her transition. It wasn't until she realized that it's up to her to help create the community she wants to live in that she truly came to appreciate all that Truro has to offer. Sam has since founded the Women's Social Network, co-founded the Showcase Truro Film Festival and participated on several local committees, including the brand leadership committee for the Town of Truro, the Events Truro Colchester committee, CMHA's Women & Wellness committee, and the host committee for Nova Scotia Music Week. For Sam, Local Love Truro is the best way for her to celebrate home! |
Michelle McCann
While she grew up in the Truro area, it took a while for it to feel like home when she returned in 2010, after years in Halifax. By the time she chose to start her own business here seven years ago, she had grown to appreciate the perks of small town living. From no traffic (unless you get stuck at a train!) to running into friends at the local coffee shop, to walking her dog around downtown, life in Truro is good! She is constantly inspired by the vibrancy, ingenuity and creativity of other local business people, and Truro's growing community pride and spirit. For Michelle, Local Love Truro is all about embracing her hometown and making it home. |
